Geocache Description:

The cache is large ammo box filled with goodies. There's a little something for the FTF. When you arrive, the coordinates will bring you to the visitors center (the house behind the land office)with a driveway off of Oxbow Road.Walk east then north to "behind" the building Gerrit Smith kept his horses in.Please respect the area & buildings.Please respect the "keep out" signs. They are in the process of restoring these historic buildings, so their may be workers around. Also no night caching.

The coordinates will bring you to the parking area of the visitors center in historic Peterboro. Home of the Gerrit Smith estate. Gerrit Smith was an abolitionist who played a critical role in the underground railroad. His estate was a safe haven for slaves. Gerrit sold land to the poor, some of whom were slaves that he helped free. His land office and several large barns still stand on the estate. The estate has been designated a National Historic Landmark. It's maintained by the Smithfield Community Association. Their website is www.sca-peterboro.org. The estates website is www.GerritSmith.org. The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. There is a visitors center on the estate that is open Saturdays & Sundays from June-September from 1-5pm. The Museum on the other end of town is open on Sundays from 2-4pm. Also on youtube there is a nice video called, "Road Trip to Peterboro, NY". Check them out. The hint below is a spoiler of the exact location.
