How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

A cache gets Lonely if it does not get found for a while... Some roadside caches get found every week (happy caches), but some of the more remote caches don't get found for long periods of time, sometimes a cache will sit for years between being found.

This Challenge will prompt cachers to hunt for the Lonely caches that don’t get many visitors.

It is also intended to keep alive some of the oldies that attracted me to Geocaching when I began this sport. For those who accept this challenge, I would encourage you to carry maintenance supplies, in case these older caches need a little TLC.

Here's how the Lonely Cache Challenge will work.

1. You must find caches that have been Lonely for a period equivalent to 4 years, using one of the following options, (but you may NOT mix and match options).

Option A. Find 1 cache that hasn't been found in the last 4 years.(When I wrote this, there was 1 cache in VT that has been more than 4 years since it was found).

or
Option B. Find 2 caches that haven't been found in the last 2 years. (When I wrote this, there were 10 caches in VT that had been more than 2 years since it was found).

or
Option C. Find 4 caches that haven't been found in the last year. (When I wrote this, there were 58 caches in VT that had been more than a year since it was found).

or
Option D. Find 8 caches that haven't been found in the last 6 months. (When I wrote this, there were 237 caches in VT that had been more than 6 months since it was found).

2. Generally accepted rules, guidelines and conditions for logging a cache find apply. These must be bona fide caches listed on Geocaching.com that you have personally (physically) found and logged. You may NOT include caches found prior to July 1, 2009, the creation of this Challenge. (For obvious reasons, Virtual and Event caches do NOT count.) If a cache has been found in the last 6 months, it is considered a Happy cache.

3. 2 cachers may both claim a Lonely cache find if they actually cache and hunted together (It’s safer to hike with a friend). But only 2 screen names may claim it as a Lonely cache even if there are a 3 or more in your group.. The rest will have to find their own Lonely cache.

4. In your online log for each Lonely cache you find, please mention the VT Lonely Cache Challenge.

5. After completing the challenge you will need to send me a note (djlasell2@gmail.com) stating which option you chose and a list of the lonely caches you found, GC# and cache name.. Also include the date you found it and the date the previous finder found it. ( I will not have time to verify every one, so you are on the honor system). Once you have completed any one of the options and sent me the list of caches and dates, you may go to the coords listed above, and hunt this VT Lonely Cache Final and log this cache.

Please don’t hunt or log this cache until you have completed the above requirements.

The coordinates listed above are for the actual final cache!!

In your online log please list the Lonely caches you found to complete this challenge.

WHAT IF you hunt a lonely cache, but when you find it, someone else has signed the logbook days ago, but is late in logging their find online??? If their online log is more than a day late, then its first come, first serve, After all, as far as GC.com cares - it must be logged in the book AND logged on their site to count as a find. Half a log is the same as no log. No log = not found yet. (Please make a note of such occurrences in your list to me)

This challenge is meant to be fun, If you have any questions, feel free to post them online or send me an email.

A list of Lonely caches is not practical, because it will be constantly changing... Lonely caches will get found (making them Happy caches) and some Happy cached will lapse more than 6 months (especially in VT winters) making them Lonely.

Special rules:
a. No whining.
b. Have FUN!
c. Some of these caches will be on difficult terrain. Hunt at your own risk.
d. Some of these caches are "in the middle of nowhere". That is the point of the game.
e. No whining.

***Special note: the first cacher(s) to complete each of the 4 options may claim this cache as a First To Find... ***
