Geocache Description:

Welcome to our multi-cache around the old village of Waltham. The co-ordinates above are not the location of the cache but for the first clue location, although there are a number of places where you can park a car, a suggested car park is at N 53' 30.996 W 000' 06.030.

Waltham like many villages began as a settlement long before the Norman invasion of 1066. The name Waltham (W(e)ald-ham) in old English, means settlement (ham) near a wood (Weald).

Meadow land was in what are still called the Ings. Cottages with small paddocks/gardens clustered around Kirkgate, Church Lane, new Road, Skinners Lane and Cheapside. Corn was ground at one or other of the two windmills.

The present church dates, in part (lower tower) from Norman times with additions and alterations in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles together with the modern attached church hall. The tall spire which graced the tower was removed because of its dangerous condition in 1681. Considerable restoration took place in 1866-67, whilst the North Aisle was restored in 1874. More restoration was carried out in 1954 and 1957.

Some of the street names are of ancient origin –
Kirkgate (the church way) dating from Anglo-Saxon times;
Skinners Lane (sadly no tannery left in the village) probably dating from late medieval times;
Ings Lane led to the old meadow land (Ings) over which the former aerodrome extended;
Cheapside was the medieval venue for markets and fairs;
Cheesemans Lane recalls the former family of that name – the 18th. and 19th century brick and tile makers.

Now for the cache. The cache is a camouflaged pill pot which will take small swaps, small travel bugs and coins. You will have to go to the various waypoints to collect the information required in order to work out the numbers for the final co-ordinates. The walk is around the old village being no more than a mile and should be completed in an hour at the most but feel free to spend as long as you like in the village visiting the local shops and hostelries. This walk is on footpaths and, apart from the retrieval of the cache, is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. This is a very busy village and there is likely to be an abundance of muggles so please use extreme stealth when retrieving the cache. Please replace the cache exactly as you found it to avoid unwanted visitors taking it.

A short distance away is the Waltham Windmill.
