Geocache Description:

Located on the Pine Mountain Trail at an elevation of 2765 feet. This cache will require a roundtrip hike of 12 plus trail miles. Come prepared for a hike of that magnitude.

This cache is located on the Pine Mountain Trail atop the largest rock exposure on the Birch Knob to Elkhorn City portion of the trail. On a clear day look to the Virginia side and you will see John Flannagan Lake in the distance, look to the Kentucky side and you will see the Blue Ridge Mountains fading into the distance. On the day I was here (July 2) the temperature was in the low sixties, it was drizzling the rain and it was very foggy. When hiking the PMT come prepared for anything (especially if spending the night on the trail). The cache was hidden with a 15' accuracy and no clues will be given to up the difficulty a little. When you get to the location you will see the reason for the name of the cache and will probably with a little common sense be able to figure out the location of the cache.

Enjoy your hike and come prepared for a hike in the twelve to thirteen mile roundtrip range. If you have a caching partner you can park a second vehicle at the trailhead in Elkorn City and hike on through since you are at about the halfway point. I could have named the cache This Way or That. The trail is doable in a day but I wouldn't recommend it as anything can happen and it would be a shame to have to spend a night on the trail totally unprepared (at the very least bring a flashlight, jacket, food, something to build a campfire and maybe even raingear). Please be careful on this hike as at this point I would no longer consider the hike moderate but would raise it to the strenuous level.

I might also mention that I would recommend hiking from Birch Knob to Elkhorn City as the last four miles of the hike are downhill instead of having to hike the four miles up onto the mountain but that choice is yours.

A clue will be provided after the FTF.
