Geocache Description:

A short walk along the Hill of Stracathro looking down onto Stracathro with its hospital and Mansion house, and with great views across towards to the Angus Glens.

The hospital was built in 1939 as an Emergency Medical Services Hospital, for military casualties from WW2. It was designed to treat up to 1000 patients in single storey wards, each with its own air raid shelter. It was first used to treat casualties from an air raid over Montrose in 1940. The hospital also treated civilian casualties from English cities such as London, Coventry and Birmingham. Finally the hospital was used for its original purpose and soldiers s from all theatres of the war were brought to Stracathro, for treatment and convalescence.
After WW2 it became a noted teaching hospital with specialised departments including orthopaedic surgery and a high-tech surgical appliance unit. Although threatened with closure in the late 1990s, Stracathro continues as a general hospital for NE Angus.
Stracathro Mansion House, built in the early 19th century by noted Architect Archibald Simpson for the Cruickshank family provided accommodation for doctors and nurse from the opening of the hospital until it was sold by Tayside Health Board in 2003. It has since been refurbished to become a private residence again.

There is space for 2 or 3 cars to be parked at the end of the track. Please dont block any gates/entrances.
Take the rough track above the wall- not the farm road.

Cache is a 950ml square green lock and lock
