WWII STIRLING
MILL
The machinery used at Stirling
Mill originated from the Maranboy tin fields and was the property
of the Mines Department before being removed by the Army in
1942.
No 1 Flight, Engineering
Construction Section of the RAAF's No 1 Airfield Construction
Squadron, is believed to have operated the mill during the initial
period of construction of Gorrie Aerodrome in late 1942.
It appears that with their
departure from the site on 12 February 1943, the Mill continued to
be used by the Army, and later, the Allied Works Council utilising
Italian 'Aliens' as a workforce in processing timber.
The cache is a small magnetic
tin with only a log inside, you will need to bring your own
pen.
Easy location just off the
highway with parking within 10m of GZ.
Good luck and have
fun.
