Geocache Description:

Located in south Wichita. Parking is along the street. There is a nice cement walking path that passes 20 to 30 feet from the cache. This should be a quick and fairly easy find.

10/2/2017 Replaced cache as it had gone missing again. Looking for long tube covered in camp tape.

We recently replaced the leaky container with a similar, though hopefully, less leaky one. Please bring your own writing instrument. It now has a few trinkets and a new log in a small zip bag. Enjoy!

You are looking for a small camo'd container that has room for just a few items and of course the log. To start out the cache we included: A U.S. flag pin (thanks 4America), individual mosquito wipe, fishing lure (no hook), Canadian penny and an individual hand wipe.

We decided to hide a cache in this park because of the personal history it holds for Mr. FamilyFunICT.

Long, long ago, he attended Griffenstein Elementary School which was located at this site. During those many years from kindergarten through 6th grade, Mr. FamilyFunICT would participate in the school drills held monthly during tornado season. He and his school mates would sit in the hallway, backs to the wall, legs crossed, heads down and hands covering necks.

Griffenstein (by then it had become a special education center) was severely damaged by the May 3, 1999 tornado that tore-up Haysville and parts of south Wichita. Luckily the tornado came through after school hours. Had school been in session, there could have been injuries and possibly deaths because a boiler chimney fell into a hallway. The exact place where students and staff would have been taking refuge.

This cache is placed in thanks that no student or staff lost their lives in the school that day.

Griffenstein was demolished and the city made the lot into Leon Robinson Park. It has an open area in the center of the park perfect for kite flying or a game of soccer. Around the edges of the park are clusters of trees. Amazingly, some of the original playground equipment is still there, as well as newer equipment for children to use. This is a wonderful place to let your children/grandchildren play or you may just want to bring your dog for a walk. We hope you enjoy this hide and please CITO whenever possible!
