Geocache Description:

Enjoy the view of beautiful Blair Pond and share your memories in the cache's log book!

Blair Pond

“Blair Pond! Aha! How fast they spring –
The memories which the name will bring!
And here it sleeps. I tread the shore
My feet so fondly loved of yore.
High hills are west; and south, a glade;
Green fields spread east; north; forest shade;
And bush and flower and forest free, -
I see them bow to welcome me.
Encircled by its robes of green,
The mountain beauty shines, a queen."

-- John Lloyd, published in Sumner Gilbert Wood’s
Homes and Habits of Blandford, p.19

Originally known as “Twenty Mile Pond,” Blair Pond was one of the landmarks General Henry Knox passed on the “great Boston and Albany Road” while hauling cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. The road has changed substantially from the days of General Knox and John Lloyd, but as you stop on your travels on Route 23 to look for this cache, pause for a moment to enjoy the high hills, bush, and flowers reflected in Blair Pond and then add your own reflections and memories to the log book.

The cache is a 4” x 6” lock and lock container initially holding a logbook, pencil, and several small items including two travel bugs. Parking is available at the foot of Virgil Lloyd Road, but please observe the City of Springfield’s posted signs on the left side of the road.

There is some GPS bounce in the area. The initial coordinates, N 42° 10.366 W 072° 58.556 were obtained on a Delorme PN-20. A second set of coordinates taken two days later on the same GPS read N 42° 10.368 W 072° 58.550. The initial reading on a Delorme PN-40 was N 42° 10.365 W 072° 58.549; a recheck two days later read N 42° 10.368 W 072° 58.550.
