Chippenham Bridge (Wiltshire) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Miss Adelaide: Unfortunately there is nowhere else to place this cache. Since the cache has been muggled twice already, there is also no future in this location so we're archiving this one.

Thanks to all the finders for the positive feedback.

Geocache Description:

A nano cache in a beautiful setting on Chippenham Bridge over the River Avon. There are lots of Swans, Ducks and muggles.

Chippenham was established as a Saxon town at a loop of the River Avon. It became the site for a Royal Hunting Lodge in King Alfred's time (see the plaque on the town museum at the top of the High Street). King Alfred used to hunt in Pewsham Forest which was huge at that time.

Chippenham featured in history in the Doomsday book, as the location that the Danes attacked King Alfred and made him seek refuge in Somerset before beating the Danes at Westbury, and also as the seat of Parliament for Sir Robert Peel who created the early Police or "Peelers".

Chippenham saw substantial growth as a market town and then again in the 1900s as the centre for the Westinghouse Brakes and Signalling works, which became famous around the world.

You can park in the town centre car parks but they are expensive, or alternatively park free further out of town at Hatherway Retail park and walk in.

This cache won first prize in the camoflague cache competition at the 2009 MegaEvent (Weston-Super-Mega).

This cache is a nano in plain sight within a busy muggle area.
