You will enjoy the near-by scenery and appreciate the natural beauty to be found in Captain Cook State Recreation Area (CCSRA). and, of course, we hope you enjoy the cache!
For the moderately adventurous, a canoe/kyak trip down the meandering Swanson River can be a satisfying Alaskan experience. Taking the 'long way', one enters the canoe system at Paddle Lake, and after paddle and portage through and between several scenic lakes and ponds, enters the headwaters of the Swanson River. From Gene Lake, where the river is not much more than a narrow creek, you can make your way down to the river's outlet into the Cook Inlet. This trip, which can include as many as 40 lakes and a 46 mile river float, can take from several days to a month or more, depending on your inclination. We have seen it done during a long weekend, but that misses the point, and we would not recommend it.
The 'short version' involves entering the Swanson River at the end of Swanson River Road, and basically floating the remaining distance to the same Cook Inlet take out point. Two days, or so would be a good pace for this leg of the journey.
The fishing is generally good to excellent, and the scenery and serenity are fantastic ... You can travel for days, and never run into another human being. With nearly 200 species of birds, fish and other wildife residing in the area, there is a likely probability of viewing something new at every turn. Though bear and moose encounters are always possible, the main dangers to this trip are not from the animals. Large rocks lurk just beneath the generally slow moving water, and it is sometimes necessary to avoid the occasional 'sweeper' or fallen tree. Shallow water and river-choking lilly pads can present 'interesting challenges' at certain times of the year.
Finding our cache is much easier, however, and the drive to and through the Captain Cook State Recreation Area is well worth the journey. There are lots of interesting sights to see on the way, so bring a camera. You will locate the hide after a short walk up a clearly defined trail in the general area of the canoe take out point.
Note: This IS Alaska ... You are food. Skin-So-Soft is a condiment ... Bring REAL insect repellent, and as always, be bear and moose aware.
The cache has been found. Congrats for FTF!
