Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden at the site of Pearl Rock, a historic Iowa town. You can safely pull off Highway 218 heading east on a gravel road.

Pearl Rock, Iowa, was developed on an Indian trail following along the Cedar River. This trail was also used as a stagecoach route, later named the Red Ball Route. It is now US Highway 218...the Avenue of the Saints.

In the late 1800s, the town of Pearl Rock had a post office, blacksmith shop, a dam, a grist mill, and a school. The current gravel road was called Mill Street at the time. The "Pearl Rock" cache is hidden on Lot Number 3 from the old Mill Street.

On May 8, 1918, a tornado ripped through NE Iowa, destroying most of the village of Pearl Rock. Several families rebuilt their houses, but the town was gone.

We placed this cache on the site of our family's home. Generations have lived and worked here, raising chickens and garden produce. In 2000, the Iowa DOT cleared the land, making way of the new four-lane road.

We hope you've enjoyed learning about Pearl Rock!
