Geocache Description:

Echo Cliff

Echo Cliff

This EarthCache, located in Echo Cliff Park just southwest of Dover, Kansas in eastern Wabaunsee County is an example of ancient river channel deposits. The cliffs are made of sandstone, created about 300 million years ago in the Late Pennsylvania Period when Kansas was covered in water. When the water retreated, the sandstone cliffs were naturally formed.

Geologists believe that two channels actually created the area over a long period of time. The first channel created a layer in the cliff identified as Plumb Shale and later a second river created a layer that is known as Towle Shale. Two thirds of the way up the cliff, the Towle Shale layer is clearly visible. The layer of Plumb Shale is the more prominent layer.

Echo Cliff also exhibits a large-scale geological feature called crossbedding, where a series of layers are inclined at distinctive angles than to the typical horizontal bedding surface. It indicates the direction the water was flowing at the time of the deposits.

The scenic cliff overlooks Mission Creek and gets it name because of its acoustics. The hours of the park are sun up to sun down.

To claim this find you must do 3 things:

1. Estimate the height of the cliff.

2. What is the elevation at the bottom of the cliff?
