Park in Wharua Rd and walk along towards dump. Just past the end of the sealed road you will find a gate and a short footbridge on your left. Take this route and follow the track (don’t be tempted to go ‘cross-country’. You could disappear into the grass never to be seen again.). About 8 minutes up the track you should reach your goal. It’s a camoed container with the bare essentials (though we have squeezed in a tiny trinket, FTF prize?). No need to stray far from the path. It's prickly (sorry !) but the biggest of the two.
From just a little further up here you will get a lovely view over part of the settlement of Oakura, the small off-beach islands and out to Poor Knights. Continue along the circuit of the track (a 25 minute round trip) and you can overview the new sewerage plant, the dump, the rugby field, and other rural delights.
At present, if you plan to walk the circuit you’ll need those gumboots that you brought along.
This land is a council reserve held by the Community Trust who are replanting former paddocks with native trees. So, if you visit on a Tuesday morning you'll meet a small group of gumbooted geriatrics with spades who will not impede your geocaching. After 3 years the area around the footbridge is beginning to look like native forest though there's still many years of hard work to be done.
UPDATE October 2013: the track is being maintained again and the gorse is not a big issue though we still would not recommend jandals. Long sleeves for the cache collection would be a good idea!
