The Charm
We are children of the briar,
uninvited guests
the knots untied
bright cords cut.
We cannot be forgotten
will not fall away
but wait in stillness
at the heart of the hedge.
The music came to her at night and called her to the green wood. In that glade a pale knight stood, moon upon his shoulder. They danced as their songs hung like jewels upon the branches. The next evening she waited for his song, but no music came. This elven knight was not untrue he just kept his own time. For a faerie's heart beats very fast indeed and three lifetimes worth of love may expend itself in a single kiss. She waited, until her belly grew fat and she had to hide herself away. Finally, her heart broken, and when she could no longer hide her condition, she stole into the forest, leaning against a Thorn tree and gave birth to twin girls. She could not take them with her for fear of her father's retribution, so she left them, calling out 3 times to her lover's kin to take care of them. And so they did. But her heart turned cold and unyielding. Years piled up around her feet like Autumn and she heard nothing of her children until one night she heard music and ran to her window. She saw the people of the forest dancing in their midst and among them two girls she knew to be her own. She called out, but they had already returned to their world and did not hear her. Her heart then broke completely. She left er last breath caught within the briars growing up about her father's castle wall.
