Maiden Paps is the ancient name for the Tunstall Hills on the outskirts of Sunderland. They were called Maiden Paps because of their resemblance to certain parts of a maiden's anatomy when viewed by sailors returning from long sea journeys.
Locals call the two hills Tunstall Hill and Rocky Hill. Rocky Hill is the one with the trig point on top. If you have young children with you then take care near the edge of Rocky Hill.
The area surrounding the hills is now designated as the Tunstall Hills Local Nature Reserve and is a popular place for people to walk their dogs. From the top of the hills there are superb views of the city, the surrounding countryside and the sea front.
There is a spectacular air show on the seafront each year in July. If you don't want to join the thousands of spectators packed on the promenades and beaches then Tunstall Hills affords an excellent (though distant) viewpoint.
The best place to park is in the Nature Reserve's official free car park. The entrance is off Leechmere Road travelling west. Because this is dual carriageway, if you are travelling east you need to use the roundabout nearby to turn back to the correct direction.
