The first school was built in 1887, situated one mile north and one mile west of Hargrave on the SW corner of Sam Moffatt farm (22-11-27). The first teacher was Fred Crossman. The original school only had one room and was heated with a pot bellied stove using wood and coal. Double tables were used as desks. They had ink wells in them. Slates were used to write on. There were no textbooks but each pupil ha a reader.
In late August 1900, the school was moved to the village of Hargrave and located on the north side of the Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks. On March 25, 1909 a by-law was passed to raise $4,000 for a new school building. By a vote of 22 for and 11 against. The number of pupils on the roll at the old school as 36 with an average attendance of 33. On June 10. 1909 the contract was let to John Gardner who was to commence work at once. The school was to be a two –roomed building and fitted with all modern educational conveniences. Although a 2 room school was built in 1909, only one room was used for classes until 1930.
The school was closed from April 2, 1919 by order of Dr. Goodwin, Medical Health Officer, on account of the Spanish Influenza and reopened again on April 21, 1919 and closed again February 24 – March 18, 1920.

(1921-1930) Wood was bought for $5.00 cord. The school was rented out every two weeks to hold a dance at a rate of $2.50 / evening. 1925, 33 applications were rec’d for the teaching position. Wages ranged from $800 - $950 a year.
1953 both rooms of the school were finally used as classrooms. Two teachers were hired one for grades 1 – 4 and the other grades 5 – 8 with grades 9 & 10 by correspondence until 1959.

On February 19, 1968 a motion was made to dissolve Hargrave School District #482 and merge with Virden Consolidates School District #144. Vote was 30 for and 28 against. So closed an era of 81 years of school in the Hargrave District. (1887-1968)
