Das Hochmoor Egelsee ist ein Relikt der Würmeiszeit. Vor 20.000 Jahren reichte ein Zweig des Traungletschers bis hierher und hinterließ verschiedene Ablagerungen. Als sich der Gletscher zurückzog hinterließ er den Egelsee. Durch die verschlammungen sind sich die Experten nicht ganz einig wie tief der See ist.

Jahr für Jahr wächst der Moorsee um einige cm weiter zu. Er ist Lebensraum für viele Orchideen und sogar fleischfressende Pflanzen. Sie wachsen normalerweise auf dem schwimmendem Boden mitten im See. (Betreten/Beschwimmen etc verboten!!!)

Ein kleines kuriosum des Sees... er hat mehrere kleine Zuflüße, aber der Abfluß ist unterirdisch. Das Wasser fließt durch poröse Moränenablagerungen in einer "Bachschwinde" ab und tritt erst 500 Meter östlich des Egelsees wieder zu Tage.

Beantworte die folgenden Fragen und mache ein Foto mit dir zB auf dem Steg (sofern er nicht überschwemmt ist) oder dem Gebirge als malerischen Hintergrund. Questions:
Nachdem die Info TOTEIS nicht mehr verfügbar ist: Wie nennt sich der spezielle Ablauf des Sees?
Welche speziellen Algen bedecken den Boden?
Wie groß ist der See nach deiner Schätzung?

The "Egelsee" is a leftover from the "Würmeiszeit" (Ice Age). 20.000 years ago the "Traungletscher" reached into this area. When the glacier moved back, lake stayed.
Because of the massive mud the depth isn't measured very accurate. Maybe 7 meters ore more!

Every year the lake is a little bit more overgrown by swimming plants and gras. Insect-Eating plants and orchids grow here. Normaly they grow on the swimming isles in the middle of the lake. (restricted area! keep off the gras)
Several small rivers flew into the lake, but couriosly the water leaves the lake underground and comes to the ground about 500 meters east of the lake. The water drains through leftovers from moraines.
