Geocache Description:

Cambusbarron has a history dating back for several centuries and it is believed that at a part of the higher village, known as Chapel Croft, stood a place of worship, in which tradition has it that Robert the Bruce partook of the sacrament on the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn.

No structural remains now survive of this chapel, but in 1858 some local inhabitants remembered having seen part of the ruin still standing. Fleming (1902) suggests that the chapel was founded at the end of the 15th century.

In excavating for the foundation of dwelling-houses at the spot some years ago a quantity of human bones was unearthed, which pointed to the existence of a burying-ground.
The proprietor of the land, the late Dr. John Saunders Muschet, of Birkhill, set afoot a project for the erection of a "Bruce Memorial Chapel" thereon, and had plans prepared, but little more was done.

In the immediate neighbourhood stood the Chapel Well, formerly known as Christ's Well and later as Bruce’s Well. The water from this well supplied the Chapel.

Several other wells in the locality were believed to possess healing virtues but history is silent concerning them as a sacred resort.

The water from this Well was also believed to have medicinal properties and here the superstitious were wont to pass in pilgrimage to help afflicted members of their families, for which offence ordinance was made that they "mak publick repentance the next Sunday in lining claithis."

It is also claimed that Bruce sprinkled water from this Well on the field of Bannockburn before the battle.

The Well was re-opened in 1979 and a small plaque erected at that time by Central Regional Council. This plaque has now disappeared also.
