Geocache Description:

A nice little stroll around the wonders of Mount Bures.
First a climb up the Mount (Motte)
Then a wander around the Norman church, then off to a third mystery location of archaeological interest!
Note: Check the long description for some hints!

The coordinates listed are for the car parking area beside the church.

The Motte at Mount Bures was constructed around 1067/1068 after the Battle of Hastings as a defensive stronghold overlooking the River Stour and surrounding land of the Essex-Suffolk borders.Historians estimate it would have taken local labour only 40-50 days to build.Originally it would have been even higher with a tall wooden lookout tower on top.The surrounding dry moat would have been 10' deep.

The view from the top is worth the climb. Remember to count the wooden steps on the way up!
(Note:There are more on the way up than on the way down!)

St. John The Baptist church by the Mount is reputedly Norman although records only go back to the 15th century. It has been altered many times over the centuries ,the current 'Sussex' style tower being rebuilt in 1875.
Give your legs a break at the back of the church overlooking the earthworks in the adjacent field.Take a note of where you sit!

The actual cache is hidden a short walk away near an associated site of archeological interest. There is a noticeboard very near the cache to tell you what you should be looking at!

Cache location coordinates:
N 51 57.EBC
E 000 46.BAD
AB is the number of wooden steps up the Mount
CDE are the final 3 numbers of the dates in the inscription on the back of your seating position..

Final note...Please keep to the footpaths and stick to the line of the contour across the field behind the church. Friendly cows may be present!

Extra final note! The 'number of steps up the mount' clue appears to be stumping some people and spoiling their final find. This is a shame as the walk to the cache is fun so for those of you that hate counting the number I made it at time of placing was '70'

Final final note!!! Apparently the seat has now gone so the date required is 1986!
This should make the multi a simple sit at home calculation so I expect many more finds than it has had to date.
Just make sure to visit the mount and don't just rush to the cache site as you will be missing a treat (cheers,Windy)
