Geocache Description:

This is a small cache placed about a 1/2 block from the First Crematory in the United States.

This cache is located about 1/2 block from the First Crematory built in the United States.

This crematory was planned and constructed for Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne by John Dye. It was built in 1876 on land owned by Dr. LeMoyne, then called Gallows Hill. It cost $1500.

The first cremation at the facility took place on December 6, 1876. There were a total of 42 cremations between 1876 and 1901. Dr. LeMoyne was the third person cremated at the facility. He died in 1879.

The Crematory is open for tours the second Saturday of May, June, July, August and September from 2 to 4 p.m.
