The difficulty is rated at one because this is an easy find, intended to bring you to a surprisingly spectacular place.
The terrain is rated at 2.5 because: 1) the trail is not suitable for wheeled vehicles (strollers or wheelchairs), and 2) children must be closely supervised (smaller ones should be taken in hand).
The Precipice
The West Chilcotin offers many surprises, but this is one of the best. Locals call it the “Baby Grand Canyon” . Spectacular cliffs, rock-falls, and a waterfall that is in a class of its own….all of which is just a few miles (or kilometers) off the main highway. You will see it all from a well established trail along the rim. Please watch your step.
Since the intent of placing this cache is to share with you this natural wonder, and the fact that the secondary roads don’t appear on my Garmin gps/r map sets, a little direction might help. First, you need to get on the Beeftrail road. It is a wide dirt highway that was built for logging traffic, but is little used now that the mill has shut down. It can be accessed directly from Hwy 20 approximately 9.5 miles west of Anahim Lake (at N 52° 31.899 W 125° 29.049, or from the Kappan Mt. Rd (which starts directly across the highway from GC1MXMF) and crosses the Beeftrail Rd at (N 52° 25.131 W 125° 20.251. Once on the Beeftrail Rd., proceed to the Hotnarko Lk. Rd. (N 52° 28.737 W 125° 28.142). Now just follow your gps/r to the parking area.
A couple of cautions. Don’t be tempted to park at the trailhead…you will obstruct other traffic on the road. Don’t take the trail directly from the parking area as it would put you on the wrong side of Hotnarko Creek and tempt you to make a dangerous crossing. Use the listed trailhead.
The cache, itself, is an ammo can that contains the log and several toy trinkets. No need for bushwhacking… stay on the trail until you are within 30 feet of the cache. Don’t let the scenery distract you from making the find.
