Geocache Description:

This cache is located near 176th Street and 96 Avenue which is the gateway intersection to the new Golden Ears Bridge in Surrey. The cache can be accessed by parking at a nearby store and taking a walk down the new dual-use pedestrian/bike trail that parallels 96th Ave.

The following is from the Golden Ears Bridge website and sets the scene to the importance of this bridge to those of us on both sides of the river and to the importance of the overall theme of the bridge:

The people of the Fraser Valley live in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world – a terrain of forests, meadows, watercourses and majestic mountains.

The Golden Crossing Constructors Joint Venture recognized the importance of the Golden Ears Bridge project to people in this region, and adopted design themes that pay tribute to local history and geography.

The Golden Ears peaks look down on the bridge from the north. There are several explanations for the origin of the term “Golden Ears.” By one local account, "Golden Ears" is a modification of “Golden Aeries”, referring to the nests of the eagles that thrive on Canada’s Pacific coast.

The eagle was chosen as a symbol for the bridge, and is displayed on project signs, on the bridge towers, in concrete etchings on some ramps, and at the project gateways in Surrey and Pitt Meadows. Click here to view a scale model of the gateway eagle..

The design theme also recognizes First Nations and their relationship to the land through the inclusion of “fish trap” fences and specially designed lanterns along the roadway. The planting of native trees, shrubs and grasses will build a sense of harmony along the corridor and help to integrate the facility within the region.

Located at all pedestrian entrances to the Golden Ears Bridge are a series of interpretative panels, providing background information on the legend of the eagles, the first inhabitants of the land, industry on the Fraser River, and the construction project.

Once arriving at GZ you will notice that you could easily be caught in the talons of an eagle flying overhead. Take this opportunity to take a photo and post it to the cache page.

Good luck finding the cache and have fun!!!
