Geocache Description:

This is a magnetic hide-a-key cache located on Parsons Creek on the way to Taylors Island. Small pull-off area on the right as you're approaching the bridge. BYOP.

Not only does this beautiful location have a great view, it also has some interesting history. The bridge actually crosses over a narrow canal that was designed by Joseph Stewart in the 1800's. The Stewart family owned several businesses and properties nearby. Joseph Stewart wanted a way to float logs to his shipyard, which was located on the west side of Madison Bay. Under his direction, African American slaves spent twenty years digging the seven mile canal by hand through the marsh.

Interestingly, Harriet Tubman and her father worked for the Stewart family as well. It is believed that here in Madison, she met black shipbuilders and sailors who told her about the north and taught her how to use the stars to navigate. She later used that knowledge to lead slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

Congrats to hostanut for the FTF!!
