Geocache Description:

The biggest salix in Møre og Romsdal county, sacrileged by the hurricane in 1992.

In a survey conducted in 1990 this particular goat willow (selje, Salix caprea) was found to be the largest willow in the county in terms of circumference 1.3 meters above ground level. At the time it was measured to be 4.53 meters around, which for a goat willow is quite a lot. There is an even larger one in the neighbouring municipality of Hitra, measuring 5.20 meters. There have been no measurements conducted since then, so geocachers are encouraged to bring a measuring tape and provide more up-to-date data :)

Sadly, during the hurricane in 1992 the alledged 120-year-old salix toppled over. The cache owners grandfather then amputated it's great arms and pulled it upright with a tractor. It was a sorry sight back then, but the old girl pulled herself together and sprouted a lot of new branches and is now restored to a lively state, albeit not as wide as she used to be.

The cache contains the usual cache note, log book, pencil and possibly some swag. The cache placement is cleared with the landlord, so feel free to go for it.

Please note:

* Cache might sadly be unaccessible to some physically impaired people, as one must climb a little bit in order to obtain the cache.

* The cache is placed inside a grazing area for bovines. So at times there CAN be cows and bulls in the area. At those same times geocachers must also be prepared to jump an electric fence.

Happy caching and congratulations to Aure municipality on your very first cache!
