Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden on the trail behind the Cemetery at the Vets Home in Yountville. You park at the entrance to the Cemetery and stay on the paved path straight to the back. There you will see an open gate. Pass through it and start the hike staying to the right. The trail is a steady climb uphill. Not steep, but it will give you a nice work out. I have enjoyed this trail and hike for a while now and figured it is time to share it since there are no caches up there.

The cache is one that I received at the F.R.O.G.S. BBQ. It is a small mayo type of jar wrapped in black tape. There is a log and pencil along with several trading items in it.
If you continue on you will see some great views of the valley. Ticks can be a problem and there are lots of stickers in the summer. Enjoy .
When coming back down and pass through the cemetery take some time to check it out. It is an awesome sight. There we have met several wonderful Vets that can tell great stories.

The first building at the new Veterans's Home was completed in 1883, but the wait for funding for equipment for the facility delayed the opening until April 1, 1884. The home was to have been opened on April 16 (to correspond with the signing of the peace at Appomattox that ended the Civil War), but the date was moved up to April 1 to accommodate the first 13 members who showed up early.

A non-profit corporation (chartered by the State of California) owned and operated the home. The official name was The Veterans' Home and it was funded and operated by The Veterans' Home Association in San Francisco. Original funding had come from eight western states (GAR posts), and it was officially the state home for both California and Nevada.
