Bethel Church (by Trinity Presbyterian Church)
The history of Trinity Presbyterian Church takes us back in history to when Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836 and was admitted as one of the United States in 1845. To populate this area of Texas, the Peters Colony was established to entice newcomers. A single homesteader was entitled to 160 acres and a couple was entitled to 360 acres. From 1850 to 1870, due to this offer, many people came to Denton County and settled in this community known then as Waketon, Chinn Chapel and Shiloh. It soon became evident that a place of worship was necessary for these newcomers.
On March 29, 1870, two acres were donated for a church site. It was located on the current site of FM 407 and Highland Village Road. It was the Cumberland Church until September 16, 1883, when the name was changed to Bethel Church, a non-denominational organization. In 1888, a building was erected primarily by Ray Morriss Martin's grandfather. [Ray Morriss Martin was a wonderful and dedicated charter member of the current Trinity Presbyterian Church and served as the church's historian until her death in 1997.] This building was the center of activity for the area communities -- as a church, school and social meeting place. In 1925, Ray and May Morriss, twins, were baptized in that chapel. However, by 1940, the center of the community shifted to Lewisville and use of Bethel Chapel declined. The building fell into a state of disrepair.
Edward Marcus, of the Neiman Marcus empire, advocated the incorporation of a new city, Flower Mound, which was incorporated in February 1961 -- hence also the name of Marcus High School. Over time, Grace Presbytery decided to establish a new church in this fast-growing community. The First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, The Synod of the Sun, and General Assembly supported presbytery's capital fund drive. The task force purchased the present site in 1983 and called Dr. Bob Hanson as organizing pastor in June of 1986. The first service of the new TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH was held on the fourth Sunday of September 1986, in the once deserted and dilapidated Bethel Chapel while still on FM 407. The following year, the old building was moved from there to its present site at Kirkpatrick and Morriss, restored, cleaned and renovated to become Trinity's new church home. On September 27,1987, the church was organized and chartered with 103 charter members.
Quick park and grab in front of the old chapel.
We've been out of the geocaching game for four years and decided to get back into it for health reasons and something to do other than sit around and watch TV. We're BACK!!
Congrats to texaslibra, Casting Crowns, Saxophonegeek and B.Barker for FTF!
