Take a moment to view Harkness Canyon to the East. They rest on
what was once all his land.
Henry Orville Harkness a civil war officer, was an early booster of
McCammon. He and his brothers served the Union during the Civil War
and with coming peace they settled here. With a hard winter he lost
most his stock and turned to managing a toll road franchise once
owned by the late William Murphy. Subsequently he married
Murphy’s widow Catherine and would build an empire. The
growth of the railroad in the area led to the growth of Harkness's
property in McCammon. A discovery of a coal vein in Harkness canyon
fed his empire. He provided power to the early town site and later
built a dam to increase power for the growing town site. He donated
the land for opera house, dance hall, schoolhouse, and the area was
known as Harkness. on June 12th 1906 he sold the deed of several
blocks to the McCammon Investment Co. following the purchase "The
Big Store building" (still located old Hwy 91) housed the bank,
theater, department store, and hospital on the second floor. He was
a major business leader in the area until his death in 1911. To my
knowledge H.O and Catherine had no children.
