The best approach to this cache is from the east off of old Hwy 91.
Watch your footing, and the three very quiet little trolls.
In 1863 William Murphy built a toll bridge on the Portneuf River
here to serve the Montana mines. Murphy's wife was the first woman
settler in the Portneuf-Marsh Valley area. "The Portneuf Home
Station" became a resting place for travelers but Murphy’s
fees were protested by the freighters County Commissioners set a
lower rate and Murphy protested, violence ensuing gunplay, Murphy
wounded the sheriff who, in turn, shot and killed Murphy. The
Unfortunate occurrence brought Henry Orville Harkenss to McCammon
and McCammon would never be the same. (See Hark! Who Lies Here)
Just South of this location (Hwy 30) was the original boundary of
the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, and then later that boundary was
moved to the current boundary of Reservation Road in Pocatello. The
only reminder of that boundary that remains is now gone with the
closure of Indian Rocks State Park.
