A recent wind storm has knocked down a maze of beetle killed pines along the route to the caves, making the hike much more difficult than when the cache was placed. I have upgraded the degree of difficulty to reflect this, and will update this page when a trail has been cut to the caves.
An interesting drive through a maze of new and old logging roads to a series of caves.
ABOUT THE BEARCAT CAVES
Bearcat caves have only recently been discovered. While they are not limestone caves with their related rock formations, they are very impressive in their own way. There are several caves in the area, one of them goes straight down 85 feet before branching into horizontal tunnels. The cache is in one of the more accessible caves, but take care when walking along the fault line getting to the cache, as you could take a bad fall. If you take the time to explore a bit, you will find other caves. The cache is hidden in a cave with an exit at either end, so if it happens to be occupied, the occupant will be able to escape without having to get out by going past the cacher. Other caves in the area may not have an escape route, so use caution before entering them. The hike from the parking place is 800 meters, but it is not on a trail, you will be bushwacking over windfalls, so it will be wise to mark the location of your vehicle on your GPSr in order to find your way back.
GETTING THERE
Leave Highway 97 at these coordinates 50 31.116 N 119 50.096 W. You should be on a road named “Private Main”. This is just a name, it is not a private road. However, it is a well used logging road so use caution when driving on it.
Whenever you come to a branch in the road, if you are in doubt about which way to go, turn left and you will be right. The only right turn you will make will be onto the Wood 200 Road.
You will travel 16.5 kilometers on the Private Main road to these coordinates 50 24.098 N 119 54.138 W.
Remember to stay left at junctions except for the Wood 200 Road. Park at these coordinates 50 23.374 N 119 51.436 W. Mark and save this location on your GPSr. It is 800 meters from here to the cave entrance.
There is an excellent chance of seeing deer, bear or moose on this drive, so be sure to bring your binoculars and camera. While a flashlight will be handy in the caves, it is not necessary in the cave with the cache, as some daylight penetrates from either end.
The cache is easy to find, and very well stocked with quality items courtesy of the Bearcat Clan. There is also a log book and pencil. Plan on 4 hours round trip from Kamloops to do cache. More time will be needed if you want to do some exploring. While it is possible to drive the family car to the parking location in dry weather, I would not take a car if you are really proud of it, or if it is wet or snowing.
