Geocache Description:

Your search for this cache takes you to Plainville, CT, and a place dedicated to the men and women of Plainville who are veterans or active members of our Armed Forces, and in honored memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country.

The Plainville Veterans’ Memorial Park was established in 1945, following the end of World War II, in recognition of the men and women of the town of Plainville who have served in our country’s Armed Forces. There are monuments honoring veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf War. The World War I – World War II monument is inscribed with the names of all the residents of Plainville who served in those wars. Ceremonies are held in the park on Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day every year, and include the laying of wreaths, a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps” to honor those who made the Supreme Sacrifice in defense of our country.

Update: On May 29, 2017, during the annual Memorial Day ceremony, the park's newest monument, honoring Plainville's Gold Star Families, was unveiled. Gold Star Families are the immediate relatives (parents, sons/daughters, husbands/wives, brothers/sisters) of any member of the Armed Forces who has given his or her life in the line of duty. The monument was the idea of Plainville residents Bob Doolittle and Dan Burgess, both of whom are Armed Forces veterans.

There is plenty of parking on the streets around the park, in a municipal lot across from the park and in several diagonal spaces close to the cache site. There are a number of comfortable benches in the park, making it a fine place to relax or enjoy lunch. The cache is wheelchair accessible right up to the retrieve, although some assistance may be needed if there's snow on the ground.

The park is located in a busy area near the Post Office and downtown businesses, so watch for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Muggle factor is usually high during the day, so have your stealth moves at the ready! You’re looking for a small round plastic flip-top container with just enough room for a log sheet. Be careful how you open and close it and please replace it exactly as you found it, magnet side up, since there’s only one way it can be properly attached!

While you're in the park, please take a few moments to visit the monuments and remember that it's because of our military veterans and active military that we're free to travel and enjoy hobbies such as geocaching and so many other things that we as Americans often take for granted. Freedom is not free!

Props and kudos to Spencer Roy, of Scout Troop 67, Plainville CT, for his terrific Eagle Scout project! He got the Veterans' Park looking really great by clearing and trimming a lot of overgrown evergreen trees and shrubs, removing the ones that were damaged during the October 2011 snowstorm, laying down mulch, and planting new trees and shrubs in the areas bordering the park. Way to go, Spencer... Scouting ROCKS!

Thanks for visiting and Happy Caching!
