Kender du avnbøgen? Traditional Geocache

Mange forveksler avnbøgen (Carpinus betulus) med den almindelig bøg (Fagus sylvatica), og det er egentlig lidt ærgerligt, for de er ret forskellige, og er slet ikke i familie sammen. Avnbøgen hører til birkefamilien (sammen med birk, el og hassel) og bøgen hører til bøgefamilien (sammen med eg og ægte kastanie).

Avnbøgen kendes bedst på stammen. Hvis man tager et tværsnit af stammen, vil bøgens stamme fremstå som nærmest cirkelformet, hvorimod avnbøgens tværsnit er meget uregelmæssigt. Dette ses også let i naturen, og med lidt øvelse kan en avnbøg udpeges på afstand.

Bladene er også forskellige: Bøgens blade er helrandede (glatte) og avnbøgens blade er dobbelt-savtakkede.

Find den: Her i skoven kan du finde avnbøgen lige i nærheden af det skarpe hjørne, hvor Kalvøstien starter som skovvej. Du kommer nærmest forbi på vej mod denne cache.

Bemærk at cachen ikke ligger ved en avnbøg!!

Many are mistaking a Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) for the common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and it is actually a pity. They are quite different and they are not in family together.

Hornbeam are best identified by the trunk. If you took a cross-section of the trunk, the Beech would appear almost circular, and the Hornbeam would appear very irregular. This can be seen easily in nature too.

The leaves are also different: The leaves from a Beech are nearly smooth and the leaves form a Hornbeam are double-serrated.

Find it: Here in the woods you can find Hornbeam naer by the sharp corner where the Kalvø-track (Kalvøstien) goes into the forest. I think that you are passing the trees on your way to this cache.

Please note that the cache not is placed by a Hornbeam!!
