Your destination is the statue of Kemal Ataturk which is in a commanding position overlooking the harbour. Atatürk became known as an extremely capable military officer in the Turkish army during World War I, defeating the forces sent by the Allies. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the war, he led the Turkish national movement in the Turkish War of Independence. His successful military campaigns led to the liberation of the country and to the establishment of Turkey. During his presidency, Atatürk embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms. He sought to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, democratic, and secular nation-state. Years later, when the Turkish Government agreed to Australia's request to rename the beach where the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli as Anzac Cove there were a couple of reciprocal concessions. One was that the Australian Government agreed to build a memorial to Kemal Ataturk in Anzac Parade, Canberra. The others were to name that part of of Lake Burley Griffin at the foot of Anzac Parade as Gallipoli Reach and to name the entrance to King George Sound at Albany as Ataturk Entrance. This imposing monument to Ataturk has also been built here in honor of the man. The cache is close by to his statue and is a pvc tube with room for swaps, a log and a FTF prize. There is no need to leave the paved area when searching. There are 3 different places to park to access GZ, each about the same distance away, which is less then a kilometer. You can park at 35 02.138s 117 54.629e or 35 01.743s 117 55.268e and then follow the walk path to the cache or you can park at 35 01.958s 117 54.671e and walk down the old road until you reach the walk path. It's your choice, each is a pleasant stroll. Enjoy.
