Anstruther on a Summer day

In an episode of Weir's Way Tom visited Anstruther. This episode is a great wee introduction to the town. Although he really only covers Anstruther Wester, he covers a lot of local history and really makes you want to visit the place! This cache only covers this small area covered by Tom and it should not take you more than 10 minutes to complete!
For a more comprehensive tour of Anstruther then Allieballie's Anstruther Amble cache is recomended.

The coordinates at the top of the page take you to a suitable car park. After admiring the great view from the car park you'll notice that there are lots of drain-covers. Just to help make up the numbers, find the one with the enscription: "x0C Circular Trojan 75...BSB97"
Now leave the carpark and walk up to the house of Captain Keay. Keay was a sailor who won fame as the captain of the "Ariel" a three-masted clipper built in Greenock, which held the record of 83 days for the voyage from Gravesend to Hong Kong against the monsoon.
There was great competition between clipper captains at this time, because the first back to London with the new season's tea could raise a much higher price for his cargo than his competitors. Read the blue plaque and find the house number: D1.

Across the road from Keay's house you can see one of the real delights of Anstruther - Shell House. This really is a fantastic looking curio. Robert Louis Stevenson in his Fife journals described it as an ‘agreeable eccentric’. The house was embellished with shells by Alex Batchelor, who even decorated his coffin with shells (and charged people to see it!). No numbers to be got here but well worth the tiny detour! Now cross the road over to the churchyard (be careful when crossing the road as it is a busy blind corner!). At the entrance you should see a sign from the local council. From this sign find the postcode - KY1E and the telephone number 65F336.
In the graveyard there are some benches looking across the village. Go have a seat and calculate the final coordinates.

The cache is located at N56 13.ABC W002 42.DEF, where 'A' is x/2.

If you enjoyed this cache then maybe you might wish to try some of the other caches in the Weir's Way series. Have a look at my other published caches to see what's available.

And if you want to pay homage to the great man, whynot visit Glasgow to do the Dear Green Place cache placed by jester2005 that is specifically about where Tom grew up.

Good luck in your caching exploits!

And please please be careful not to get muggled!!!
