Dartmoor has one of the most prolific collection of stone-age
artefacts in the world; standing stones, circles, rows and burial
sites.
Perhaps the most intriguing are the standing stones; they are
often many metres tall and weigh several tons. They are also often
carefully sited, and probably did not just get raised up from where
they lay on the ground – but were transported to their
current sites. When you imagine the amount of physical effort
involved in placing them where they are, they must have been of
very real importance to those who raised them. The question has
always been what were they for? It is most likely they were part of
the religious lives of their creators, but how they were used is a
mystery.
One of the most enigmatic of the stones is the Harbourne Man;
its dagger-like profile aimed obliquely at the sky. It has been
suggested it is part of a water cult, or a fertility artifact, but
who knows?
