A unique and magical glimpse of Mother Earth at her finest can be found at this location. This incredible formation of rock was named Grandfather Mountain by the pioneers who thought the ridgeline looked like a man peering into the heavens.
This rock mass once lived below the rivers located on now, North Carolina, 1.2 billion years ago. However, a collision of two continents, North America and Africa, caused older Precambrian rock to become pushed upward over top newly formed rock, forming what is now known as Grandfather Mountain.
Many millions of years later, the Precambrian rock weathered and transformed causing the younger rock, a mere 730 million years old, to come back into view. In other words, younger rock found a fault line to climb through the older rock.
As you stand at this unforgettable site, you are witnessing the old and the young blending and growing together over eons of time.
At this location you will have the ability to walk across the Swinging Bridge that swings over one mile from the rock formations below it.
a) Take a photo of you, your family, or friends at this location and upload to the cache listing.
b) Walk to the middle of the bridge while it is swinging so very far above Mother Earth and read the green banner painted just below your feet. Tell your fellow cachers exactly how many feet that you are standing above sea level at that location on the Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain.
c) Please e-mail me the name of the rock that was pushed upward to form Grandfather Mountain.
