Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Wilson Park right off of Mt Rushmore Road/ Hwy 16. This cache is a block away from the Historic West Boulevard District. Please put the cache back exactly where you found it. Sign in only. Bring your own pen/pencil. May need to use pen/pencil to remove cache.

The reason for this cache location is to draw attention to West Boulevard. This is a great neighborhood to go jogging in or to take the dog for a walk in. I have marked a suggested parking waypoint in front of Address: 1602 West Boulevard. I would suggest walking from the parking waypoint, north, toward St Joseph Street. Take a left on Quincy St. Then take a left on 11th Street when you come to it. Follow 11th Street to St Charles Street and take a left. This is a great loop to do to view the historical houses in the area that are not right on West Boulevard.

West Boulevard, Rapid City, South Dakota

The Neighborhood

Founded in 1876 by gold miners, Rapid City quickly established itself as the "Gateway to the Black Hills," drawing tourists long before the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt were carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore 20 miles outside of town. Today, tourism remains the city's biggest industry, though many residents work in manufacturing (cement, chipboard, and farm equipment) or at Ellsworth Air Force Base. The city's two historic districts include the city center, with its Italianate, Renaissance, and Classical Revival storefronts, and West Boulevard, a haven for a mixed bag of residents that includes lots of retirees.

The Houses

Three building periods spanning 1875 to 1949 produced an eclectic mix of styles, including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Prairie, and Art Deco.
