Geocache Description:

A multicache near Custer, SD

This cache is a multicache with four stages. During the course of this cache you take you back in time to the late 1800's. Be certain to bring a notepad and a writing instrument as you will need to take notes.

NOTE: All coordinate conversions for this multicache will require you to either add or subtract from a listed set of coordinates based on the clues. You will need to drop the decimal point and address only the last five digits for all coordinates when doing your math. When you input the coordinates into your GPS you will need to add the decimal back in.

Stage 1. This point is located at N 43° 46.061 W 103° 35.414 where you will retrieve a clue for Stage 2. While at Stage I, you will need to answer this question: what year was the Stockade Lake Spur trail dedicated? Add the four digit year to the following coordinate: N 43° 44.211. Likewise you will need to subtract the four digit year from the following coordinate: W 103° 34.313. Again, drop the decimal and deal with only the last five characters of the coordinates. Off to Stage 2…

Stage 2. Observe the sign located at this site for clues that you will in order to take you to Stage 3 and has two questions. First question, according to this sign, how many horses and wagons were part of the 1874 Custer Expedition? Add the sum of horses and wagons to this coordinate: N 43° 44.205. Again, drop the decimal and deal with only the last five characters of the coordinates. Second question, what year was this sign erected by the Custer County Historical Society? Add this four digit year figure to W 103° 29.816. Again, drop the decimal and deal with only the last five characters of the coordinates. Off to Stage 3…

Stage 3. At this location you will find the clues that will take you to Stage 4, where the cache is located. There are four possible locations where you can find the information to the final stage. First question, Captain John Mix and the 2nd Cavalry Company discovered the Gordan Stockade site in what year? Add the four digit year to the following coordinate: N 43° 43.805. Second question, What year did President Andrew Jackson declare the Treaty of Laramie effective? Subtract this four digit year from the following coordinate: W 103° 32.716. Off to Stage 4…

Stage 4. This is where you will find the cache. It is a medium sized plastic container with a logbook and various swag items.
