A multi cache remembering the Canadian Liberation March through West-Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen.
CANADIAN LIBERATION MARCH

Op 14 oktober 1944 (2e Wereld Oorlog) bestormde de Canadese Infanterie de kust van Hoofdplaat. Hier begonnen ze hun 33km lange bevrijdingsmars door West-Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen om uiteindelijk te eindigen in Knokke (Belgie) op 1 november 1944. Gedurende deze mars werd het door Nazi’s bezette Zeeuwse gebied bevrijd.
De start van deze multi cache begint bij de start van deze Canadese bevrijdingsmars te Hoofdplaat, zie het eerste Waypoint. Gedurende springtij kan deze locatie onder water staan en kan deze cache niet gedaan worden. Deze multi-cache neemt je mee langs het eerste gedeelte van deze bevrijdingsmars (2 km) en is het beste te doen op de fiets, anders moet je ook weer 2km terug.
Waypoint 1: N 51° 22.516 – E 003° 39.879
VOORZICHTIG: De stenen en houten steiger kunnen glad zijn!
Op deze locatie tref je een houten steiger aan. Aan deze steiger hangen [A] ladders; A = Aantal ladders. Ook zie je hier 3 stalen palen vastgemaakt aan de houten steiger. Met hoeveel moeren is 1 stalen paal vastgemaakt; B = aantal moeren per stalen paal.

Waypoint 2: N 51° 22.409 – E 003° 39.844
Hier zie je de oude haven van Hoofdplaat waaruit vroeger veel agrarische producten werden aan- en afgevoerd. Nadat de dijken werden verhoogd in het kader van de Deltawerken is deze haven buiten werking gesteld. Wat is het maximale waterniveau (meter) dat in deze dichtgeslibde haven aangegeven kan worden (rode nummer) op de peilstok, C = aantal meter waterniveau.

Waypoint 3: N 51° 22.392 – E 003° 39.821
Op deze locatie vind je enkele borden met informatie over de omgeving en de geschiedenis van dit gebied. Op het informatie bord met braille codering zijn de schorren in de Westerschelde weergegeven. Wat is de naam van de grootste schor die nabij Hoofdplaat ligt. Geef de woordwaarde (a=1, b=2, c=3, etc...) van de beide woorden waaruit de deze naam bestaat. D = woordwaarde eerste woord, E = woordwaarde tweede woord.

Op deze locatie staat een monument dat herinnerd aan de Canadese bevrijdingsmars en de gevallen slachtoffers. De volgende gegevens dienen hier verzameld te worden:

Op deze locatie vind je het oude gemeentehuis van Hoofdplaat. Dit is niet meer in gebruik, tegenwoordig maakt hoofdplaat deel uit van de Gemeente Sluis. In welk jaar is dit gemeentehuis gesticht, dit jaartal is I.

Waypoint 6: N 51° 21.9HF – E 003° 39.G92
Op deze locatie staat de voormalige windmolen "De Hoop". Het was een ronde stenen grondzeiler die gebouwd is in 1850 en gefungeerd heeft als korenmolen. De molenromp, die in slechte staat verkeert, bezit nog resten van een kettingkruiwerk, een zeldzaam mechanisme dat slechts in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen en het aangrenzend Oost-Vlaanderen te vinden is, en dat nog slechts bij één intacte molen, namelijk die te Wippelgem, te vinden is.

On the 14th October 1944 (World War II) the Canadian Infantry Brigade landed on the shore at Hoofdplaat. They started their campaign in Hoofdplaat and marched 33km through West-Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen and ended in Knokke (Belgium) on 1 November 1944. During this campaign they liberated this area from the Nazi’s occupancy.
The start of this multi cache is located at the start of this liberation campaign in Hoofdplaat, see the first waypoint. During spring tide the first part of the cache route can be flooded, please do not do this cache during spring tide. This multi cache takes you along the first part of this liberation march (2 km), best done by bicycle, otherwise you also need to take the same 2km route back.

At this location you find the wooden jetty. [A] ladders are attached to this jetty; A = The number of ladders. You also find 3 steel poles connected to the wooden jetty. With how many nuts is 1 pole connected to the wooden jetty; B = The number of nuts per steel pole.

At this location you find the old harbour of Hoofdplaat from where in the old days many agricultural products were shipped away. When the dikes were fortified under the “Deltawerken” project this harbour was taken out of order. What is the maximum water level (meter) that can be measured at this location (red number) on the sounding rod; C = The maximum water level.

At this location you find several information boards with information about the surroundings and the history of this area. On the information board with Braille several sandbars of the Westerschelde are displayed. What is the name of the largest sandbar near the village of Hoofdplaat. Give the word value (a=1, b=2, c=3, etc...) of both words (summation letter values) which form the name of this sandbar; D = Word value of the first word, E = word value of the second word.

At this location you find the old town hall of Hoofdplaat. This town hall is not in use anymore, nowadays Hoofdplaat is part of the municipality Sluis. In which year is this town hall build, this year is I.

At this location the form windmill “De Hoop” (Hope) is located. This mill is built in 1850 and functioned as a flour mill. At the base of the mill still some remains of the chains, which is a rare mechanism which is only found in this region.
