Geocache Description:

Let's get together and have fun

In 1951, Australia celebrated fifty years of Federation with a parade and the staging of the theatre production "An Aboriginal Moomba: Out of the Dark". In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II visited Melbourne in her first appearance as reigning monarch and the City Development Association and the Melbourne City Council proposed the Moomba Festival.

Moomba facility was established in the 1960s after discovery of gas and, later, oil in the in the Cooper Basin. At Moomba the incoming raw gas stream initially has water and carbon dioxide removed. Next the liquids recovery plant extracts the valuable condensate, ethane and LPG from the gas stream. A gas pipeline runs 832 km to deliver natural gas extracted from Moomba to Adelaide. Gas is used for generation of electricity and house hold heating. A similar gas pipeline to Sydney stretching over 1,160 km is mainly for household gas supply. An ethane pipeline follows along the same route to Sydney for delivery to petrochemical industries. A 659 km pipeline runs southwest to Port Bonython, South Australia for overseas export of product.

Moomba is owned and operated by Santos. Moomba has no permanent residents and was Australia’s first on shore "fly-in, fly-out" facility with accommodation for some 1,200 people living part-time at Moomba and in south-west Queensland.

The Moomba plant and field operations are closed to the public and there are no facilities, supplies or accommodation available for travellers. Moomba has just recieved a Telstra 3G tower and you will be able to use your mobile in this area.

The cache is located at an information booth overlooking the Moomba production faciliy on the Strezlecki Track. Please note the fuel requirements for this track. Lyndhurst to Innamincka is just under 500km with no services in between. Although the Strzlecki track is not too arduous, you will need a well equipped vehicle, preferably a 4WD, with plenty of water and enough fuel to get at least 500Km. Conditions can be very extreme in summer.
