Geocache Description:

Lake Elizabeth, hidden deep in the Otways near the township of Forrest, is an inspiring sight with heavily timbered flanks and calm waters punctuated by the trunks of dead trees, drowned when the valley was flooded.

The lake was created in 1952 when record rainfall sent thousands of tonnes of rock and earth tumbling into the East Barwon River, damming the river and forming a lake in a remote forested valley. You can reach Lake Elizabeth from Kaanglang Road, Forrest. Follow the signs to the car park a few kilometres along a dirt road. Alternatively, a challenging 7 kilometre cycle track leads from Forrest, past the Barwon Reservoir to the lake. Take the short hike (1hr return trip) from the carpark to the lake. The hike is medium grade with changes in altitude and steeper sections. The track is well formed and maintained. You are looking for a 1L Sistema container containing a log book and pen. Also contains some swaps. This cache will be a more difficult find in summer, holidays and long weekends due to increased muggle activity in the area. Please keep this in mind when retrieving and replacing the cache. Visit at dawn or dusk for your best possible chance of spotting an Ancient One.
