Geocache Description:

Almost a cache and dash.

Village lock ups are historic buildings that were used in rural areas for the temporary detention of people. They were often used for the confinement of drunks who were usually released the next day or to hold people being brought before the local magistrate.

The majority of surviving lock-ups date from the 18th and 19th centuries when rural communities struggled to police thefts, burglaries, shootings, drunkenness, the obstruction of watchmen and the stealing of livestock. So nothing has changed then!

The village lock- up fell out of use when the County Police Act was introduced in 1839 and local police stations were built with their own holding facilities. During World War 11 many lock-ups were used by the Home Guard as sentry posts or places for storing arms. In recent years a number of village lock-ups have been restored and graded as listed buildings. There are lock ups all over the country but in Cambridgeshire they are to be found in Broughton, Eaton Socon, Fenstanton and Needingworth.

This square brick structure in Broughton was built about 1840 in the middle of the village green. It was last used during a 'feast' between the wars, when a man arrived on horse back and began to run amok amongst the stalls. He was arrested and put in the lock-up. This is a quiet village but has a busy pub. Difficulty is 1.5 due to muggles on a pleasant day.

Discretion is required. Own pen/pencil needed. Swaps are not possible. There is plenty of parking in the area.
