This cache should be a easy park and grab. It is located on the edge of a museum parking lot. We have permission from the Museum to hide the cahe in this location. The Museum is a nice place to visit and is free but they do accept donations!!
Graveyard of the Atlantic is a name given to the treacherous waters of the Outer Banks. The hazardous currents and weather have caused the loss of thousands of ships and has taken many lives. More than 2,000 ships have sunk since 1526. One of the more famous ships that sank was the USS Monitor.
One of the most mysterious shipwrecks was the Caroll A. Deering. When returning to its homeport in Maine it was found aground on Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras NC.. When the five-masted schooner was sighted on January 29, 1921 by the Cape Lookout lightship, the Captain of the lightship was called to by a crewmember of the Deering. He said that they had lost their anchor and needed the lightship to tell the Deering Company. At 8:30 am on January 31,1921 the Caroll A. Deering was found run aground on Diamond Shoals. There was no sign of the crew but the lifeboat cables hung at the Deering’s side. On Febuary 4, the Coast Guared cutter, Manning, arrived and boarded the Deering. When they entered the galley they found food soaking in preperation for the next meal. The tables were set with plates and silerware and the only living creature was a six toed cat!! The crew was never found., but there are still living relatives of the six toed cat on Hatteras Island today
So while visiting Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of NC, make sure you visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras NC and look for this cache in the area of the Museum!!
Also, first time finder!! Has the chance to get a beautiful Christmas tree ornament handmade by Striperboy's Mom!! So take something nice to trade!!!
