A natural area in the center of town is a great place to find caches like this one. No bushwacking needed. Don't break plants or break a trail. No Need to Remove the container from its skin to sign. Park in the cul-de-sac on West Anderson, take the stairs, and head straight in, you'll see the opening. When it opens up you should find it right away.
When this park was restored from a tangle of brush and debris, the city held a big grand opening ceremony in the area on Thrush Street. This oft over-looked wilderness is a credit to the city and an urban oasis. Soldier Springs Park is divided into two sections. One section is accessed off Charles Street and includes tennis courts, playground, and ball fields. The natural section is accessed off Thrush Street and includes a one-mile walking path.
It is a fabulous place for birding, and the best place to take a walk, ride your bike, see some neat old stuff from the dump, and relax in nature.
The Texas Historical Marker located on Thrush Street reads:
Confederate soldiers are said to have camped here in the 1860s because of the inviting spring. In 1890, veterans used the site for their 25th reunion. During the next year, 55 acres were set aside as Soldier Springs Park. Chataqua programs (1910-28), circuses, town gatherings, other reunions, and the public hanging of a criminal (1908) occurred here before the park fell into disuse. The city dump (1934-53) and then a caliche mine, the area reverted to park use in 1973. Civic groups joined to develop recreational facilities and restore natural beauty with native plantings.
