Geocache Description:

Take a tour of this Boerne hilltop. You will be rewarded with history, historic architecture, and a scenic view.

Three historic markers describe schools in Boerne, the Kuhlmann-King House, and Henry J. Graham.

Two historical Boerne school houses, two residences and a commercial property have been relocated and restored at this location. Don’t miss the original school directly behind City Hall. This structure and the Kuhlman-King house are nice examples of hill country German construction methods. You may enter City Hall to see the remodeling and historic photographs. Brochures about Boerne are available. The interiors of the Kuhlman-King House and Graham Building are toured by appointment only. Take time to admire the magnificent live oak trees. It’s worth the trip just to see these trees.

From the Boerne Public Library files it is recorded that in June 1873, the Gesangenverein (Singing Club), at a regular meeting, resolved to donate lots 119 and 120 to the Boerne School Society provided and on the condition that the Boerne School Society will within one year build a schoolhouse with at least two rooms. In August 1874, the Gesangenverein resolved that whereas the Boerne School Society had completed a two room schoolhouse by June 17, 1874, they be granted the deed to the two lots, "in consideration of the benefit accruing to us and our children from the establishment of an institute of learning in the Town of Boerne." This was the beginning of the first official public school in Boerne.

The building was used as classrooms, a lunch room, and exercise room at various times while a school. It became a workshop and storage area, then finally, offices for the city after the property was purchased for the City Utilities.

The new city hall building was designed by Alfred Giles, a noted San Antonio architect.

The Kendall County Courthouse complex is a short walk or a little over a block drive from here. Attractive and interesting buildings and four historical markers are worth a walk around. You may also score two benchmarks near the old courthouse – an NGS to log and a USACE for fun.
