Geocache Description:

Researching your family history can uncover many surprises – and not all of them good ones! You will head up many dead ends and find conflicting stories whilst on your journey. But before you can set out on this voyage of discovery, you need to decide on your target, the reason you wish to undertake this task. This will be different for everyone, and my own reasons for this exploration will remain just that – my reasons, and they are not for sharing. I will however tell you that everything you encounter is to the best of my knowledge true. It’s not a fantasy tale; it is an historic adventure into one branch of a family – my family!

So where do we begin? There is a 100-year rule that basically restricts publication of details from the last hundred years, simply because these people may still be living. These are the people you need to meet and to whom you should ask your questions, to enable you to set forth into the unknown. They are also the people whose memories may have faded, or they may have secrets they do not wish to share. Take note of everything you hear, everything you see, and record where it came from and when you found it, as you never know when you may need to refer to it again.

For many years I had known very little about one person in the family, just his name and the area where he spent part of his life, but I never met him, nor have I ever seen any photographs of him. Very slowly, over a lengthy time period, I managed to find his father’s name, but nothing else. Of course I could spend many hours in libraries reading through vast volumes, or searching microfiche, but I never really had the time to follow that route.

A key source of information are the census records that occur in the UK every ten years. The first in 1841 was very basic, but later ones contained far more information. In 2001, the 1901 census became available via the internet under the 100 year rule, and the 1911 is also becoming available. I searched the 1901 census for his father’s name, but found nothing. Surely this wasn’t a dead-end already – he must be there! Then BINGO! I found him, his surname was spelt wrong as “Tovey”, as were some other details, but it was definitely him! We had found Great-Grandfather Ernest Arthur Torry, and our journey had begun.

Ernest was an 18-year-old apprentice plumber living on New Chester Road, Birkenhead. His parents were John and Mary, a watchmaker and tobacconist respectively, and very interestingly John was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire – would we ever find out why he moved over to Birkenhead?

You must now take the next step and go back a further 20 years. Ernest wasn’t born until 1882 so you need to seek John and Mary’s family. This information is freely available if you look in the right place, and if you succeed you will know, as you will also find Alice and Annie at the same address.

Add together the ages of three of John and Marys children - Frederick G, John R & Ethel - call this “CHILDREN”. Also add together John and Marys ages and call this “PARENTS”. You will find your reward for completing this first stage of your adventure at N 53 20.(CHILDREN)6 W 002 57.(PARENTS – CHILDREN)6

You can approach the cache from various directions, but I'd suggest parking at the co-ordinates at the top of the listing. From here it's a lovely walk with exceptional views.
