Geocache Description:

A cache and dash. Parking can be found on the road nr. the cache. The container is big enough for small items.

The Cache is based on the outskirts of chattenden, a small village in the parish of Hoo St. Werbergh. The name means forest settlement. Even now there is a large wood (great chattenden woods) to the north of this site.

Chattenden barracks was an extensive barracks and housed hundreds of soldiers working in this part of kent. It was also home to part of the Royal School of Military Engineering. The Royal Engineers still have a few of their bases around this area including a earth moving unit, boat yard. There is also a bomb disposal team and dog unit around the chattenden and lodge hill area.

A light guage railway ran from upnor to chattenden barracks and onto lodge hill transporting men and munitions around the area.

The barracks were closed in the 1980’s and are now set for redevlopment into housing.
