Mangamate Waterfall (Bay of Plenty)

Easy access by vehicle. Popular camping area.
The site is the Mangamate Campsite in the Whirinaki
Valley, about 90 km from Rotorua, and close to Minginui. It has long been in use as a very basic
campsite on the banks of the Whirinaki River by the
Mangamate Waterfall, where a tributary drops some
10 m into the river. There is a safe swimming pool
here. Trout fishing (Brown and Rainbow) is
available and the river is favoured for the quality
of both fishing and scenery. It is also close to
the famous Whirinaki Forest. The valley has a long
history for the Ngati Whare. There is an
information display at the Minginui turnoff.
The site is admimistered by the Dept. of
Conservation on land owned by the Ngati Whare. It
is classified as a "standard" campsite, so charges
apply, on a honesty system. As part of the 25 year
anniversary celebrations of Whirinaki Forest, early
September, it is being developed with landscaping,
fishing platforms, improved parking and tent sites,
and the construction of a cooking shelter. The
latter, an open sided one with benches, table, and
an ambitious looking open fireplace has been
completed, but at the time of cache placement the
rest had some way to go.
It is easily reached via SH38 and the Minginui
turnoff, shortly east of Te Whaiti. The turnoff is
77 km from Waikaremoana and 20 km from Murupara.
The campsite is reached by 1 km of dirt road on the
right 6.5 km from the turnoff. It is signposted.
The cache should be easy to find. Drive right to
it. Satellite coverage is excellent. The final few
metres are not wheelchair accessible due to fern
and scrub. Look for a litre Sistema container.
