This establishment is now a self-catering lodge. The owners, Brian and Joy Alberts, have kindly allowed us to hide a cache at the remains of the Old ox cart wagon trail. Please respect this well-preserved piece of history and take care not to damage anything. Please report your presence to someone at the lodge or main house before attempting any of the three caches. Please stick to the paths. Should Brian require you to go to the Fort with a guide, please agree to that. If you do not follow the rules, we may be asked to remove the cache, which will spoil things for other geocachers.
About the Old Wagon Trail:
Although there are other paths or ways to lead you to the Fort at Barton’s Folly, following the Old Wagon Trail is by far more fun and has stunning views of the area. This Old Wagon Trail dates back to when the Fort was built in 1901, so it is more than 100 years old. When you follow the trail towards the Fort, you will notice the construction of the trail with stones and rocks. As you walk up the hill, look behind you and you will see the beautiful Magaliesberg stetched across the horizon.
Imagine pulling a wagon up this hill back in those days – it must’ve been lots of hard work!
When arriving at the farm, follow the signs to the main parking. Please park at the provided co-ords, announce yourself at the lodge/house and proceed through the little gate by the main house. Then turn left and follow the road around to the back of the mountain. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLIMB THE CLIFF STRAIGHT UP!! We suggest to attempt "The Fort at Barton's Folly(GC1W768) cache after this one as it is on route.
