Geocache Description:

INDIAN SEATS!! This is an Erosional Phenomena in the area where I grew up.

Erosion over the years removes rock, soils, and sediments that make up a certain area or formation in a particular region. The formation or geologic event can change from one time period to another. Over time mother nature accomplishes this through the effects of wind, water, ice, and sediments shifting down a mountainside, creek bed, river bed, or even into the ocean. In this case, the runoff of wind, water, and other small particles eroded around the base of granite boulders eventually weakening their foothold allowing the boulders to slide down the mountainside. The end result of this event was the formation of the Indian Seats. The Indian Seats are three structures on the edge of the rock face that resemble seats. This area has been created into a preserve and would be a Great way to spend an afternoon.

Sawnee Mountain has stood as landmark for the community of this area for many years and home to a variety of different people and cultures. The mountain was named in honor of a minor chief of the Cherokee Nation. Sawnee Mountain has been called the southern most tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers a very beautiful view of the lower section of the Appalachian Foothills. The mountain range is comprised of granite, volcanic, and limestone formations that stretch from Georgia to Pennsylvania. From Pennsylvania the mountains become rolling hills that stretch to the southern tips of the Green Mountains in Vermont. The purpose of this cache is to educate you with a little bit about the landscape and region that make up part of the mountain ranges in the Eastern United States.

The journey at Sawnee Mountain will take you to the formation that began to develop thousands of years ago. It is believed that the Indians may have used these for ceremonial gatherings, dating as far back as 500 B.C. At the Indian Seats, you will enjoy a background view of the North Georgia Mountains and some of the old gold mines along the trail. The preserve offers bathroom facilities, a playground, over 3 miles of hiking trails, and a new interactive center. I hope you enjoy the hike. The parking area at the Preserve is at N34 14.70, W84 8.34 with hours of 7:00 am till dark. The parking area at the Visitor Center is N34 15.327 W84 08.330 with hours Mon-Fri 8:30am-5:00pm, Sat 10:00am-5:00pm, Sun 1:00pm-5:00pm. The trails connect from the Visitor Center to the Preserve area.

I hope the views, trails, and playground entertain you and your families. There is an interactive center that opened just a few months ago at the opposite end of the trail. This would be a great place to take the kids.

To gain credit for the cache, the answers to the following questions will need to be sent to my email and not posted on your log. A picture of you and your GPS at the Indian Seats or at the platform beside them will be required:
