Geocache Description:





A sul da aldeia de Alferce situam-se as ruínas do pequeno castelo do Alferce(ou da Pedra Branca).
Consta que este castelo foi construído no século X ou XI pelos muçulmanos, servindo de apoio militar ao castelo de Silves. Está localizado num ponto chave onde permitia controlar um dos principais acessos entre o Algarve e o Baixo Alentejo. Este acesso era feito pela ribeira de Monchique partindo de Silves. Para alem disso servia de apoio ás populações residentes. Consta também que foi destruído à 900 anos pelos Cruzados que desembarcaram em Portimão e destruíram tudo à sua passagem.
Neste momento apenas se notam alguns muros e as cisternas, estando num estado avançado de degradação o local. Está em vias de classificação desde 2005 e foi recentemente (Março de 2009) alargada a sua zona de protecção.


Para chegarem ao local desviem no Alferce para o lado da Fornalha e sigam a EN-1037. Um pouco mais à frente vão encontrar as placas para as ruínas. Deixem o carro junto à estrada principal(N 37° 19.182 W 008° 29.634 ), no largo de terra batida e sigam a pé pelo monte. São aproximadamente 700 metros até ao local da cache. Deixem o local da cache e o envolvente tal como estava.

At south side of Alferce are situated the ruins of the small castle of Alferce (also know as castle of Pedra Branca).
This castle was built on the X or XI century by the Muslims, serving as military support to the castle of Silves. It is located in a key point which allowed to control the main accesses between the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo. This access was made by river departing from Silves. In addition provide support for resident populations. Near 900 years ago was destroyed by the Crusaders that unship in Portimão and destroyed everything in it's path.
Currently we can only see some walls and tanks, being in advanced stage of degradation the place. Is in the process of classification since 2005 and was recently extended its zone of protection (March 2009).

To reach the place, in Alferce turn to the side of Fornalha and follow the EN-1037. A little further on you will find the signs to the ruins. Let the car in the dirt park (N 37 ° 19,182 W 008 ° 29,634)and follow by foot the trail. Are approximately 700 meters to the local of the cache. Let the location of the cache and the environment as it was.
